Embryonic Stem Cell research given the green light, says Barack Obama

Embryonic stem cells are stem cells derived from the inner cell mass of an early stage embryo. These ESCs, as they are commonly known, can develop into any adult cell in the human body, from heart and muscle cells to nerve cells, from skin cells, to nerve cells and even to gametes.
However, many have called the research risky, unethical and most importantly, overbudgeted. However, most others feel that Mr Obama is making the right decision as they can cure almost all genetic diseases and physical injuries, they also minimise the risks of rejection, incompatibility and other life threatening complications. Indeed, it appears that the benefits outweigh the dangers. Imagine a world where spinal injuries can be cured, where organ transplants are no longer needed and an extra boost of white blood cells could be injected to fight off deadly diseases. This hopefully is the future of ESC and most people want to realise this dream as soon as possible.

Embryonic stem cell research has almost zero chance of rejection. The DNA used is the patient's own, thus, the white blood cells will not identify the newly inserted cells as their own not foreign, thus the risk of rejection is kept at a minimal, unlike other means of transplant, where rejection is more than 60% even though its between father and son. Rejections are extremely devastating as the immune system has to be suppressed so that the injected cells will not be anniliated, this leaves the patient vunerable to even the slightest cold, resulting in possibly fatal consequences.

However, there is a fine line between ESC and human cloning, which is universally accepted as unethical to a certain degree. ESC could promote human cloning and result in a cloning boom. This can lead to unforseen dangers and the possible anniliation of mankind. Also, with the uncertainty of the success rate of this operation, many feel that the budget is already too big, especially in these troubled times. This budget could be spent in more reliable areas of medicine, such as medical equipment, research on virus and bacteria and how to fight them, etc. This makes ESC a debatable topic that may reach a conclusion.

In spite of the dangers, the ESC can be implemented quickly and will not need for a donor to transplant or transfuse their respective organs. The ESC will have a 100% compatibilty rate and a donor will not need to be found. This is significantly more advantagious than our current organ transplant system, where a compatible donor has to be found. The ESC will allow the doctors to grow the organ with stem cells containing the patient's DNA, providing a safer and faster alternative to organ transplant. A worthy choice for an investment.

Indeed, a decent investment it is. Stem cells have already saved tens of thousands of lives, with ESC, more will be saved. There was a story of a girl who was ran over by a car. Her spinal cord was cut and she was paralysed from the neck down. Conventional medicine could do nothing to help her, all they could do was to give her morphine to cut the pain. It took a group of revolutionary stem cell researches to administrate the stem cell treatment. Now, at the age of 20, she is walking again. The stem cell research has changed lives for the better, now, ESC will change even more. Mr. Obama, we are behind you.
